Oh, Downton Abbey. You are pure crack. In a good way, but still ... did that last episode of season 2 have to end like it did? Who knows when I will get my hands on season 3?

By the rate this is going, Mary and Matthew will be married when they're in a senior residence. By which time it won't matter any more if he can beget children or not. Just saying.

It's like they have this plan, that in every season, there must be exactly one shared kiss only to have everything crushed instants later and by the end, they're agreeing again it just won't work ... until the next time.

But I thought the scene where she's singing and then he comes was really sweet. Cliched, yes, but sweet. Okay, so I knew half an hour beforehand it would happen, from the moment she said she needed a male voice I knew this would be a plot point later on, and when he went missing, I knew he'd return just in time for their duet. They sang together very sweetly, though, so I'm inclined to forgive the cliche.

Seriously. I called a lot of developments early on. The moment Lavinia felt faint at the dinner table, I knew she was a goner and Cora would live in spite of being worse off.

Then, I had this faint hope that maybe, just maybe, they would let Lavinia live and have Mary and Matthew face the situation like grown-ups instead of hiding behind Lavinia and Sir Creepy, respectively. Oh, and maybe give Matthew a reason to love Lavinia other than, she's not Mary. But no. She's such a terribly flat character (and they could have made so much of her) and then they have to make her die, and even worse, have Matthew pull a guilt complex out of thin air. Hello-o. She told you ON HER DEATHBED you were being a moron and that you should get your act together and marry her, which was about the only moment where she had real spunk at all (seriously, even when she told Matthew she'd stay with him through thick and thin she was so bland. Mary was almost as dedicated to Matthew's care as her and just so much more believable in that she would see the situation through with him no matter what. I fully believe Mary wouldn't have shirked from the situation any way more than Lavinia, and since she has about twice as much spunk as Lavinia, with her you'd actually believe she'd be staying by his side like a bulldog).

Before that, I was really disappointed they pulled that 'oh btw Matthew can walk after all' out of thin air. Like 'oh I didn't want to tell you but! surprise! It wasn't permanent after all!'

I mean, great for Matthew and all (but then, he's fictional) but I'd really have liked to see how they would deal with the situation without the magic cure. Realistically, I mean. And with Matthew knowing exactly that half the grief in the situation from certain quarters would come from the loss of his fertile loins rather than his legs. (Poor man!) I mean, I thought the way they got all squirmish when the matter was discussed was really well done. Must be so nasty to be reduced to a prize bull, essentially. Not just knowing you'll never be able to get it on again, but knowing *everyone* else is knowing it too.

(And I admit the crackfic-lover in me thought of scenarios where Mary and Matthew get married and even though *everyone and their dogs* know Matthew can't have children, she (with his okay) manages to get some. And legally, they'd be the heirs to Grantham, if he doesn't dispute the paternity (which he wouldn't, obviously.) and can you just imagine the look on the Dowager Countess' face when Mary informs her that some footman, or Turkish diplomat, or whatever, did the honours?)

I also wish they would make more of Daisy instead of having her be so one-dimensional. She deserved some development.

And I hated how they came up with one thing after another why Anna and Mr Bates couldn't be married. Soooo glad they didn't pull a Mary-and-Matthew on that one. And I just love how when she calls him 'Mr Bates' it's more intimate and loving than any 'John' could ever be.

Oh, and can I say I just love Sybil and Branson? Man, that man has got some patience, and then some. Really wonderful how he wasn't pushy at all and still managed to make his wishes perfectly clear to her.

And Edith, too, so much better than in season one and so much more likable.

And I really liked how they gave O'Brien a bit more character in this one, although it was a bit unsubtle in places.

Isobel though got a bit grating with her 'Must. Be. Involved'-gritting-teeth and all.

And Lord Grantham and that housemaid, that plotline that came to nothing? That was annoying. What was the point?

Okay, enough said. Any thoughts? Anyone else seen it?
